Piet Steel (1950) is a former Belgian top diplomat, an expert in economic and corporate diplomacy, having particular expertise of international trade issues and of Asia, mainly Japan, Vietnam and Hong Kong.  Between 1975 and 1997 Mr Steel held various diplomatic assignments, including Chief Negotiator during the multilateral trade negotiations of the Uruguay Round in Geneva, Belgium First Ambassador to Vietnam and last Consul General of Hong Kong under British rule. In 1997 Mr Steel joined Solvay Group, overseeing its chemical and pharmaceutical global government affairs. He was an associate member of the European Round Table of Industrialists. In 2005 he became Vice-President of External Affairs of Toyota Motor Europe. In 2010, the Government of Japan appointed Mr Steel as its Honorary Consul General for Flanders region. Mr Steel was born in 1950 in Sleidinge (Belgium). He is married to Carine Van Leene with two daughters. He graduated with a Law degree at Ghent University (Belgium). He is holder of several national and international honorary medals. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling, history books and cooking.
